Strandhotellet Gl. Skagen dates all the way back to 1910 when, unusually for the time, it was founded by a woman, Mrs. Marie Schmidt. Over the years, the hotel has had a number of different owners and, in 1981, it was bought by J. Philip-Sørensen, who is still the proprietor of this old hotel today. In his youth, J. Philip-Sørensen went on holiday to Tversted and later to Gl. Skagen. Due to his great fondness for Gl. Skagen, he has made it possible for the old historic seaside hotels to remain in Danish hands. He has simultaneously carried out a thorough restoration that has paid careful attention to the style and history of the original buildings. Today, Strandhotellet Gl. Skagen is a contemporary, well-furnished and authentic seaside hotel which, among many other things, is known for the smell of delicious home-baked cakes that wafts through the lounges. Apart from the charming main building with its homely rooms, there are also several houses that belong to the hotel. This gives the guests the possibility to stay in one of the many apartments, each of which offers its own unique charm and exclusive decor.
The environment and life in and around the seaside hotels of Gl. Skagen offers a large collection of funny, exciting and fantastic stories and anecdotes - both from years past but also from today, where the hotel is also visited by the locals (known as “skawboer”). If you sit yourself down in the café at Strandhotellet Gl. Skagen, or in the brasserie at Ruths Hotel, it is very likely that you will be able to hear and experience them at first hand.
